April & Zuma

I’m originally from Los Gatos and the Santa Cruz Mountains and I moved up to the San Juan Ridge community in 1999.  I think with my children becoming adults and on their way in life, and becoming a grandmother for the first time, contributed to my strong desire to live my life in a more meaningful way and that means having fun and living my passion!  I also feel I want to do something to make a difference in people’s lives … to help them on their path of creativity and expansion …

I love people and I love working with people to help bring awareness to community. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed working as a volunteer for non-profits such as the South Yuba River Citizens League; Sierra Friends of Tibet; and the Sierra Deep Ecology Institute; and helped put on community fundraisers such as the Big Mountain Benefit and Music That Matters concerts.  I’m still an active volunteer and participate by emceeing, stage managing, catering, and whatever else I can do to help.

Music has always been in my life one way or the other.  With encouragement from my partner Zuma, I began to sing in our livingroom on “Jam Nights”, at open mics and at events.  I love to sing.  Music carries me.  It helps me move through hard times and it inspires me always.  I began to see how there are so many talented musicians out there writing powerful music and not being heard.  I feel the beauty in their song and the power in their words of love, inspiration and above all, their truth.  The yearning in me began to help musicians on their path of creativity and expansion.

It first came to me as a spark to do a radio show featuring local songwriters and musicians performing all original music on the Open Mind Entertainment Network, working with Ondre of Ondre, Int’l., and the other broadcasters.  It seemed they were all having fun and at the same time bringing awareness and encouragement to people all over the world.

The Open Mind Entertainment Network (O.M.E.N.) is an internet broadcast company dedicated to bringing entertainment and information to a world-wide audience, as Ondre, a gifted healer, has clients all over the world.  The network offers a different approach to broadcasting by bringing diverse shows that would not normally be aired on mainstream radio.  Entirely built on private funding, O.M.E.N. is a progressive company that is constantly evolving and searching for new materials and community partners.  To me, Mountain Beat Music seemed like the perfect fit as music can be diverse and not always one genre these days, but can be a fusion of many.  Music has no borders, no boundaries, and reaches all walks of life.  The intention of my show is to highlight not only the polished musician, but the down-home, off the front porch musician – the musicians who aren’t on mainstream radio.   It’s truly amazing the music that can be produced and recorded by equipment run off of alternative energy sources, way out in the sticks!

Once I started talking with musician friends about my radio show, they began to be inspired about airing their music and I began receiving CD’s from all over.  As the spark grew to flame, I found the musicians that were interested and excited about my show were not only from the Nevada County area, but were from Sacramento, Chico, Angels Camp, Mendocino, Berkeley, and Arcata … and so the fire grew to include all of Northern California.

Mountain Beat Music has been broadcasting live on internet radio on www.openmindradio.com for six months now and is now a three hour show,  We are currently updating our website to reflect the new shows and broadcasters coming onto the network so keep checking back for the most current schedule!

The musicians I feature play music of all genres, i.e., Classical, Folk, Latin, Reggae, Jazz, Native American, Rock, Celtic, Flamenco, and the Creatively Obscure.  As the program has become more established, the format has evolved to where I conduct live telephone/studio interviews with artists who are promoting newly released CD’s, upcoming events and performances.  Accordingly, I have been promoting venues as well.

So you see, there are a lot of exciting things happening with Mountain Beat Productions and the Open Mind Entertainment Network in 2008!  Check out my Schedule of Upcoming Shows and my Songwriters Showcase at CoffeeTown webpage and stay tuned!

Many blessings to you and yours for a healthy and peaceful New Year!
